I'm thinking about going somewhere this summer, but I am not sure where. I would like for it to be within a day of driving. Where should I go?
I've been to Corpus Christi, South Padre, Dallas (parents live there), El Paso.

What do YOU want to see? What do YOU want to do along the way and once you get there?
You see, there is no one great place to go. It's hard to give someone an answer to this because what I find amazing might bore you to tears. I would suggest getting out a great map of Texas and the nearby states that has information on it about state and national parks and other things to see. Then spend some time pouring over it and see if anything grabs your fancy. After you get a few ideas, you might come back here for more input.
Personally, I either tend to head towards beaches or mountains. HTH!
Well, within about 9 hours of San Antonio, and leaving out Mexico and the Dallas area, you've got:
Big Bend National Park
The Gulf Coast almost as far as New Orleans
The Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri
Carlsbad Caverns
Oklahoma City
Looking into those areas should get you a good head start on seeing what's available in your own "neighborhood", but Judy's right, this is going to be your call and requires your input. Good Luck

I guess I should've specified that I prefer "nature-y" type of attractions, places where doesn't require a lot of money but still fun to do. I like beaches but besides south padre and corpus christi/port aransas, I don't know where else has good beaches around here, suggestions?
Also, any suggestions for cheap motels (which ones are okay, which ones to avoid), or is camping better?
AZBuck mentioned Big Bend....and I have heard amazing accounts of other people's trips there although I haven't had the pleasure myself.
I prefer camping whenever possible. Unless the weather is horrid and wet, I'm usually camping. I've never had any problems with the low-cost chains or most "mom and pop" establishments. Just scrutinize first and, if you're wary, you can always ask to see the room before you commit.
