  1. Default Boston and up coast of Main

My husband and I are planning to fly to Boston and then driving up through Maine. We would like advice on the best places to tour and to stay in Maine with a couple of nights at bed and breakfasts, We are in our mid 70's and can walk or hike but not long distances.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

Default Quality Time on the Coast

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Much will depend, of course, on how much time you have for your trip. With just a few days, I wouldn't plan on going too much farther Down East than Portland. With two weeks or so, Acadia National Park comes into play. So, for those two possibilities:

One Week: Start in Portsmouth NH with a stroll around Strawbery Banke, and then take a short drive up to York ME and the first of several great lighthouses, the Nubble on Cape Neddick. The next 'quaint' town down the coast is Ogunquit and would make a nice town to just stay for a day or two and explore the coast, the town, and the other sites it has to offer. Finally, in Portland check out the Portland Head Light, the waterfront, and the Eastern Promenade.

Two Weeks: Working farther Down East from Portland, take the time to visit the 24/7 flagship store of L.L. Bean's in Freeport, then poke down into some of the many peninsulas that jut out into the Atlantic. One of my favorites is the one south of Damariscotta. Using ME-129/ME-130 head for Cape Pemaquid and Pemaquid Point. I'd also suggest that you take a ferry ride (take the car or not) out to one of the offshore islands such as Vinalhaven or Isle au Haut. The ultimate goal for this longer drive is, of course, Acadia National Park and its gateway 'city', Bar Harbor.

As for specific places to stay, I am unfortunately a little less versed. Since I used to live on the coast of Maine, these were all day trips for me. I do recall another member here reporting on a great Bed and Breakfast run by the Sisters of Mercy (I think) in Saco ME. Portland and Bar Harbor are just chock full of such establishments.
