Default LA - Boston via I80 & east coast

Im planning a serious roadtrip to rival my Aussie trip in '01 but I had 8 weeks for that one, this time I'll be hiring a hertz rental in LA and dropping it off in Boston and I only have 4 weeks max. Ive already seen CA, AZ, NM, CO, UT,NV and FL, GA, SC so I wanted to concentrate on the mid-north and east coast.
Any or all suggestions considered and appreciated.

Paddy, Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! So, you want to zoom across most of the western USA and then start slowing down in the midwest and New England?

    Default NW first

    Howdy, and welcome back.

Looks to me like you are in serious need of a trip to Oregon and Washington before heading east. That means a blast up I-5 and at least a week in those two states. Then a week across Idaho, Montana, to Yellowstone, Black Hills, SD, and on into Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, and across to western Pennsylvania before hitting the Northeast then down the coast as far as Williamsburg, VA, at least. At least that is one general plan. Another would take you futher south to Kentucky, Tennesee, West Virginia, Virginia to DC, etc.

If you don't want to do the Northwest, it is too bad you couldn't just fly to Denver and save a couple days of driving.

I'd say you still need to start at least in South Dakota at the Black Hills, which probably means a drive to Salt Lake City, then east on I-80, then north from Cheyenne, WY. From there, the Great Lakes region is nice as is just about everywhere else.

If you specific likes and dislikes, let us know. When are you doing this trip?
