Need suggestions starting from Chgo

In July my spouse and I were planning to drive/go to Nova Scotia on vacation. But now we are only going to have a week for vacation. We will be starting from a West suburb of Chgo. We are young 50's. Like to hike and sightsee. Anyone have a good idea for our week of vacation. But dont want to be in car over 6hr at a time. I have some ideas but would like to have others. Thank you

For the outdoors, I'd probably choose northern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan, possibly even doing a circle tour of Lake Michigan. For a trip with a more historic bent, try the Great River Road with stops in Nauvoo, Keokuk, Hannibal, St. Louis, Ste. Genevieve and some of the Lincoln sites downstate. A third option would be bits of the Ohio River, Mammoth Cave and the Great Smoky Mountains
