Thanks for the tip! Found a couple places I think is worth seeing along the route!

We will not be able to find a designated driver at the age of 25 unfortunately, but that will only be necessary if we rent a car wouldn't it?

Another thing crossed my mind; Will taking this trip in January be a problem beacuse of the climate in this part of the US? or should we consider doing it later in the spring, say March/April?

And one other thing; if we manage to get a hold of a fairly decent car, what will the insurance and registration cost? We know a guy at 21 living in the Houston area whose name we may use if we decide to buy a car. Would this be a huge burden for that person?

Thanks again for helping us out!!

It definitely could be! In this litigeous society, it is the person who is on the insurance/registration who could be left to carry the burden, should you be involved in any mishap. And multi million dollar settlements are not unheard of. But even tens of thousands could break your friend. It makes for stressful driving. Your age would not make insurance cheap.

This is a burden I would not put on my children. Think carefully before you put it on your friend.

And if you decide to go the Amtrak way, make sure you buy the pass before leaving home. It is tons cheaper.

Sounds reasonable. I wouldn't do that either.

After serious consideration we've come to a decision to postpone this trip until we all reach the age of 21, which will be in about two years. There's too many problems making it happen now. USA and its legislation! In Europe we could easily do it! Anyway, postponing it will give us a lot more possibilities, I'm not saying it's because of the alcohol-part, but for instance the casinos in Las Vegas, night clubs etc.

Thanks again for all the help! Will definetely come back when needed:)

I think that's a wise decision, all things considered. It will give you time to plan and save and it'll all still be there waiting for you to see, and don't hesitate to drop by with your questions when the time is right.

    Default sadly true

Yeah, it isn't easy to travel here when you are under 21 and are not a US resident. If you live here its not too bad because you can reasonably own your own car, other than the alcohol restrictions, its fairly easy to get around.

I'm not sure obtaining a car while being under 21 would be any easier in Europe, but it is a whole lot easier to get around there without a car.
