Myrtle Beach

Work is sending me to Myrtle Beach for a conference, never been there. My husband is going, we are flying but will have some time with a rental car. Any suggestions for a "short trip". Myrtle Beach sounds like it is a "tourist town". We like to get off the beaten path a bit. Thanks. I posted in June about a trip. We ended up staying at the "Shack Up Inn", in Clarksdale Mississippi because of info I found on this forum, It was great....

Not knowing how far afield you're willing to go to get out of your "tourist town", but assuming you'll want to get back to your work-supported digs in Myrtle Beach, I had a look at what was within a 2½ hours' drive. The clear choice, at least from my experience, would be Charleston. While hardly off the beaten path, taking the ferry through the harbor out to Fort Sumter, clambering aboard a WWII aircraft carrier or submarine, a tour of one of the Plantations along Ashley River Road, or a peak at the recently recovered CSS Hunley would all qualify as unique experiences.

The Shack Up Inn was great. Friendly folks, lots of charm, great price. Clean, but not fancy. The TV gets one channel, the blues station. We sat on the front porch and chatted with the other "shackers". My husband is a guitar player, so he was thrilled that there was actually a guitar and amp in the room. The biggest thrill my husband had was when we met the folks in the shack next to us, a couple from Texas. The guy was a dead ringer for Eric Clapton. My husband had gone into the shack to call his buddy and tell him how cool this place was, when he comes out "Eric" is playing with our dog. Priceless....If you want to relax with a beer on your front porch it's easy, but finding a bottle of wine is another story. There ae some odd liquor laws in Mississippi, wine can only be bought in a liquor store. It took us a while to figure that one out. If you want a laid back relaxing time try the Shack Up Inn. We also had our dog with us. I had called ahead to ask about the dog and the response was "we like dogs, bring him on down, he'll have a great time".
