Christmas trip from Mississippi to Oregon

We want to travel from Mississippi to Oregon for Christmas this year, but with small children and a car without 4 wheel drive, I am worried about traveling through mountains and encountering road closures/treacherous conditions.

Would anyone like to offer tips/advice or good routes?

Can you be more specific as to where in MS and where in OR? Also, how many days do you have to make the trip?

Basically, if the weather gets bad it gets bad, and there isn't anything you can do about it except to monitor conditions (safetravelusa.com is a site with links to road conditions in each state, and weather.com is also very useful, I wouldn't travel without a laptop computer and/or a smartphone) and be prepared to detour and/or find a hotel and wait it out. I would also make sure your car has a good set of all-season tires on it.
