I will say, if the accident was a couple years ago, it would seem unlikely that it would impact your ability to use it for a road trip. Really, roadtrip miles are easier than stop and go city traffic. Obviously, a mechanic will be able to tell you what is really going on and if there are any issues that would be a problem on a long trip.

I will also say that if money is a factor, it could be cheaper for you to wait to purchase your car until after you arrive, so you wouldn't have to deal with the potential issues of licensing, titling, etc in 2 states. Seattle's climate could also be easier on cars than what you might be able to buy in Boston.

But having said that, new cars are fun and exciting, and a roadtrip isn't a bad reason to be looking. I'd recommend looking at lot of different models in the crossover segment. Really, the only way you'll know what you like is to get behind the wheel yourself.

If you are planning on buying a USED car, you may be better off either selling the Matrix and renting one for the trip, or getting the Matrix fully roadworthy. If you buy a used car or take the Matrix, I'd get a AAA membership.

    Default Agreed!

    I'd get a AAA membership.
Yup, and not just the basic membership. Get the premium. You will be going through some places where, in case of a breakdown, the tow could well exceed the allowance in a basic membership.

While you are there, get maps (free to members) of all the States through which you will be travelling. It will give you a much better view of all the route options available to you, should you need to depart from your planned route.... either by weather or a detour. Don't be tempted to rely solely on your electronics.

    Hi Everyone,
I will download those apps they look very useful. I am a member of AAA and I will check to see if there is a higher level than I have and also will be smart to have hard copies of maps. I love real maps anyway. Your ideas have been a great help.
    With much appreciation,
    Carolyn

I'd like to amplify on something I said - if you are going to buy a USED car you should wait till you get to WA - they will be mostly rust-free unlike anything you will find in the Boston area. There's also the extra expense of buying it in MA, paying their fees and getting it inspected, then doing it all over again when you get to WA.

Thanks glc, a lot to think about. My brain is starting to hurt me. I appreciate everyone's input.
