  1. Default Montreal to Fort Lauderdale Flrodia

    Hi Everyone!

I am currently traveling in Mexico and it looks like I will have a couple extra weeks for traveling. Was thinking of maybe getting a flight from Mexico to Montreal and road triping from Montreal to Florida. I have 2 weeks for this trip, and would like to visit the main attractions, especialy spending some time in Montreal and New York city. Do you think it is doable in this time frame? Also, I was thinking of doing this via bus and not car, mainly so I can sleep if I wanted to, but also to lower costs. I need to be back in Fort Lauderdale on July 7th (starting this trip around June 23rd). I guess my questions are:

    1. Is it even doable?
    2. Can I do it via bus?
    3. How much should this trip cost? If I am staying at Hostels and avoiding fancy resturants and shopping?

Thanks so much for all you helpers out there!

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Both Trailways and Greyhound offer service from Montréal to New York and on to Fort Lauderdale. and both Montréal and New York have excellent public transportation systems including subways for getting around. Whether that can all work for you and your budget will require you to check into fares, schedules, hostels, and a number of other items, but it's certainly 'doable' in the physical sense.

    Default The train.

There is also the option of taking the train down the east coast. The Amtrak is usually a very comfortable train. I'm not sure if it runs all the way from Montreal. If you are thinking of sleeping then I would think the train would be much more comfortable than the bus.

As for Hostels, check carefully for NYC hostels. They are not particularly cheap, but certainly the cheapest accommodation in that city, unless you are a member of Couchsurfing, and have a couch on which to crash. By a long shot the HI hostel on Amsterdam Ave is the best in the city. It is also the most expensive, for those reasons. Even with more than 600 beds, it is essential to book and turn up in plenty of time. Close to a subway station and a few blocks from Central Park it is ideally situated. Its facilities and security is second to none. I would highly recommend it. I have heard too many horror stories about the other hostels in NYC.

The same applies to some extend in DC. The HI hostel there is centrally located, close to the train, bus at the door and walking distance to most the main attractions. It too has a great reputation, though there are other hostels I could trust in DC.

Amtrak does have service from Montreal all the way down the east coast to Miami.

In that case I would get a multi city ticket all the way down the coast. Decide which cities you want to get off to visit and get your ticket. The sooner you buy it, the cheaper it is. Having travelled on both bus and train for extended journeys, I can assure you it is more comfortable to sleep in the reclining seats of a train, than in a bus which stops and starts, changes lanes and bumps along.
