  1. Default Lake Superior - 10 Day Trip Advice Request

    Hello All,

I am planning on taking an RV around Lake Superior this June.

If anyone has any 'must see' sights and places to park an RV that would break the trip into equal portions i'd be very grateful.

I was hoping to do 5 seperate stops, staying for 2 nights each time.

    Thanks

    Rich

Are you going all the way around including Canada?

I've done the entire US portion but never Canada save Sault Ste. Marie where we took a boat trip through the locks and in to Lake Superior.

Along Minnesota's North Shore Drive (Route 61 from Duluth), don't miss Split Rock Lighthouse. Other nice stops are Gooseberry Falls State Park, the Palisades Head and Shovel Point. This is considered to be one of the most scenic drives in the US and the sheer, 100+ foot cliffs are spectacular.

Bayfield, Wisconsin is a nice little town where you can take a boat cruise through the Apostle Islands and a ferry to Madeliene Island.

In Michigan, a boat tour along the Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lake Shore is a "must do." Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Whitefish Point area and Whitefish Point itself are both good stops.

    Default Some Others

There are a ton of great stops to make in a circuit of Lake Superior. Besides those that Charlie pointed you to, you should also have a look at spending some time in Isle Royale National Park. You will have to park the RV in Grand Portage, Minnesota (Copper Harbor or Houghton, MI) and take a ferry over to the island, as NO vehicles are allowed. Then along the northern shore in Ontario, there are several Provincial Parks that allow camping including Sleeping Giant, Rainbow Falls, Neys, Lake Superior, and Pancake Bay. I agree that a visit to and tour of the Soo Locks is in order, but I'd also spend a little more time in this area and include a crossing of the Mackinac Bridge and visits to Colonial Michilimackinac State Historical Park and the offshore Mackinac Island State Park. (Take the ferry, but leave the RV on the mainland.)
