Houston to Birmingham, AL - Need suggestions!

I am planning a roadtrip for the end of this month with my boyfriend to Birmingham, Alabama from Houston, Texas. He's never been out of Texas and I want to be sure and stop by some really cool places along way... We have to go through Louisiana and Mississippi so I know there has to be great stops along the way. Any suggestions are welcomed!

Starting not too far from home are some great natural settings along the Creole Nature Trail, and then I'd suggest that you skip New Orleans and instead head to Natchez and the start of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Just north of Jackson is a worthwhile little hike in the woods at the Mississippi Petrified Forest and outside Tuscaloosa is Moundville Archaeological Park. Those should all be unique locations different from anything either of you has seen before, the essence of what makes a trip great.
