From Southern CA to Birmingham??

I'm want to drive from southern california to birmingham...I don't know what's gonna happen while doing this, but i just wanted to get some input. Does anyone have any advice or tips?

How many days do you have? What are your interests? Scenic routes? National parks? City life? Shopping? Family trip or solo?
