  1. Default I-90 Road Trip Suggestions???

My best friend and I are planning a trip from Boise, ID to Kentwood, MI and are planning on driving mostly along I90, but what are some good places to see and stop?
We are already planning on seeing Yellowstone, Crazy Horse, and Mt Rushmore, but what are other places that we wouldnt think of? We want to see all the "local" stuff that tour books wouldn't suggest.

What things have you all done that you loved?

    Thanks!!

PS. We are 21yr old college students, so free and cheap places are best ;)

    Default Ask the locals

By far the best way to find interesting places which may not be in your guide books, is to speak to the locals when you arrive at a place.

One point of interest which comes to mind is about 20 miles north of Belle Fourche SD, up highway 85, on a side road (old 85), is a small monument in a farmer's field, just off the road, to mark the 'Centre of the Nation'. One of those quirky little attractions you just gotta see. There is nothing at all there, other than the survey marker and the cairn, adorned by Old Glory.

At the visitor centre in Belle Fourche there is a replica, since (they say) most folk do not want to take the extra trip to see the real spot. To me the drive was so worth it.

Default Where can depend on when

    Hello joe,

As this is posted in "Fall and Winter Road Trips" I assume that's the season of your planned travel. Whether or not that's the case, my own recommendations are pretty much seasonal in nature.

So, roughly when do you intend to travel?

Access and facilities in Yellowstone are extremely limited in the winter unless you have a snowmobile or cross-country skis.

Not far from Rushmore is the Badlands and Wall Drug.

    Default well traveled

I've been over all of this ground many many times, and listed out some of my favorite stops here.

I'll add to that, if you are semi-typical 21 year old college students, you'd probably enjoy spending a little time in LaCrosse, WI, which has the World's Largest 6 Pack (actually filled with beer), a free Brewery tours with samples, and far more bars than any other town with 50,000 people!

There's also a lot more to the Black Hills than just Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

You might want to consider stops at Wind or Jewel Caves, the Minuteman Missile Site, and Deadwood, just to name a few places in the area.
