When traveling into Canada or Mexico, by car or by foot, is a Passport necessary?
My understanding is, not at the moment, but passports will be required in the future. If you are going in the near future, probably not. The rules are changing in 2006-2007. Bob
As Bob said, a passport isn't required right now. To get into Mexico, I do understand you need either a Passport or an official copy of your birth certificate with your state's raised/embossed seal. The rules aren't changing to go INTO another country, mind you, as I do believe you'll still be able to cross into Canada with only answering a few questions and perhaps a inspection... its getting BACK into the US that's going to be a major problem for some. My advice- get your passport now, and have it with you even if you are going in the near future. Passports are the best and most secure forms of documentation when traveling abroad, and usually a passport along with another government issued ID (military ID or drivers license) is all thats needed to get into a country, so its much easier and safer than carrying an official copy of your birth certificate around.
