We are planning a roadtrip from Toronto to Dallas next week and come back a week a later to visit family. What would be an interesting route to take? We don't want to spend too much time travelling but would like to enjoy some scenery on the way.

There's not a lot of wiggle room in your request. The most efficient route between Toronto and Dallas i going to take nearly three full days of driving and would run through Chicago and St. Louis. To try to go by way of a more visually interesting route and not kick the drive time over three days is a challenge, but I would suggest instead heading south from Detroit on I-75 through eastern Ohio to Cincinnati, taking I-71 to Louisville and then I-65 down through central Kentucky to Nashville to pick up the Natchez Trace Parkway to Jackson, MS and finally I-20 into Dallas. If you find that when you reach Nashville you're a little pressed for time, then you can take I-40/I-30/I-20 through Memphis and Little Rock to save some time.

We came from our Toronto - Dallas - Toronto road trip and it was fantastic. Left Thursday evening @ 6PM from Toronto and stopped midnight at Luna Pier Michigan - stayed at Super 8.
Friday morning left at 9 from Luna Pier and drove till 11PM to reach Memphis. Stopped at several locations on the way like Cincinnati for lunch, Nashville for dinner. Stayed at Best Western at West Memphis.
Saturday morning left Memphis at 10AM and reached Dallas by 5PM.
Coming back, left Dallas Friday evening and reached Memphis by midnight. Stayed at Super8. Saturday morning visited Graceland and left Memphis at 1PM. Our plan was to come back to Toronto via Buffalo. So we drove to Mansfield via Cincinnati on Saturday till midnight - again stayed at Super 8. Left Mansfield in the morning and reached Toronto late evening after some shopping at Buffalo. Throughout the trip, we stopped at Shell Gas Stations and Pilot Travel stops for gas and meals etc. This road trip was great fun and all the family enjoyed.
Wow!! That was a lot of driving. Glad you enjoyed it, defied the odds and arrived home safely.
