  1. Default Boston to NJ trip ideas

Im looking to drive to Boston from Philly and work my way back home down the coast. Im not sure where the must see sights are up North. I have been south over the years, Oc Md, Wildwood NJ Outer Banks Ect. I never went North above Seaside Heights NJ along the coast. I figured I would trave up to seven days on the road. I will be traveling with my wife and two teenage boys. We love the ocean and would love to check out the coast from Boston down to New York and NJ. Spending a day or two in NewYork would be nice. I nevered seen Lady Liberty or several sights in NY. Any help plotting a route down the coast and places I should stop to see.

    Default The 'Coast'

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Unfortunately, much of the 'coast' between say Perth Amboy NJ and New Haven CT is heavily built up, urbanized and industrialized. So my first bit of advice would be to see New York City and then just boogie to East Haven, There are several state parks along he coast between there and Cape Cod including Hammonasset Beach in Connecticut, Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island, and of course Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts. But besides beaches there are a few other sights that would appeal to teenage boys, including the Submarine Force Museum in New London, Mystic Seaport in Mystic, and one for mom - a "cottage" or two in Newport RI. And I think everyone would enjoy a ferry ride out to one of the offshore islands. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are the best known, but take a look at Block Island instead. It's reachable from Point Judith but leave the car on shore and just rent a few bikes when you get out to the island. Oh, and one thought about the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Yes, there are ferries that will take you out to Liberty Island for a price. But access to the statue itself is limited and if you don't have a ticket, consider taking the free Staten Island Ferry over and back for a great water borne view.

I should add to what AZBuck says -- the Staten Island Ferry does not actually stop at the Liberty statue or at Ellis Island. The boat to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island requires reservations and the price is roughly $12/person (or that's what it was last year).
