Seattle to San Francisco - Two college sophomores

My best friend and I are planning to go on a road trip during the second or third week of June. We're planning on going down 101 on the way to the bay area, and back along I-5, or vice versa.

We were wondering what the must see/things we must do were on this route.

Any advice for a pair of 19 year old college sophomores?
