Atlanta to Miami to New Orleans to Memphis to Atlanta!!!

Me and my girlfriend are Road trippin' from Atl via miami, New Orleans, Memphis and back to Atlanta!

I am just after some tips on safety and towns to avoid?
We are well travelled and no strangers to road trips and are sensible enough to avoid dangerous situations.
I am not worried about the major cities, just after advice on the small towns, and how safe it will be to stop off in random towns in theses states? Am I right to be cautious or have I just watched to many hollywood horror movies?????

And the easy answer is that yes, you have simply watched too many horror movies. There is nothing intrinsically more dangerous about the small towns in the South than anywhere else. My own last RoadTrip through this area was just a few years ago, and I was struck at the time by how prosperous the general area seemed and how friendly and helpful the people were. That is not to say that there is no crime, but your normal 'radar' should prove quite sufficient to warn you when you are in a bad situation and it's time to move on.
