  1. Default San Fran to Vegas in 2 days

    HI

I am doing a road trip from San fran to Vegas in 3 weeks time, we are thinking of doing 1 night in death valley and 1 night in the grand canyon, is this 2 much for 2 days and would i be better off waiting to do the grand canyon on 1 of our days in vegas. We have 5 nights vegas so it would be possible to give a day up out of these if neccessary. What would people recommend. We"re coming from Ireland so want to see as much as possible

    Thanks

    Default Not really

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

Yes it is a bit too much for 2 days if you intend on having time to see anything, but I would also like to mention that the Grand canyon is really too far as a day trip from Vegas as you would be driving for 10 hours for 2 or 3 at the canyon. It would be far more rewarding with an overnight stay.

Without the full picture and knowing what and what isn't booked makes it dificult to suggest how you could go about things. One thing for sure is, it would be a great opportunity to visit Yosemite NP and a real shame to miss out on it, it is a wonderful place and highly recommended. It is popular to travel over the Tioga pass [CA120] between Yosemite and Death valley but this will still be closed when you travel so you would have to head South towards Bakersfield and around the Southern portion of the Sierra mountain range to Death valley, but even that will be a lot to do with 2 stops but it's possible. Death valley can be seen as a day trip from Vegas so you could skip that and decide upon quality time in Yosemite or Grand canyon depending on how it all fits into your plans.

Default is that what you ment?

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I'm not sure I'm clear on what you were hoping to do, but it sounds like you want to include both Death Valley and the Grand Canyon in a 2 day trip from SF to LV?

If that's what you are thinking, then no, that certainly is not a viable plan. The Grand Canyon is 250 miles on the other side of Las Vegas, and thus it is both too far for a 2 day trip, and kind of illogical to do as part of that trip.

In fact, we actually don't even recommend doing the Grand Canyon as a daytrip from Las Vegas. Because of the distance, its really too far to go there and back in one day and have any time left over to see anything, so we strongly recommend making it an overnight trip.

I think it would be much easier for everyone if we knew more about the rest of your trip. How do you plan to fill your 3 weeks, and when will this trip take place (as its spring, its likely there will be some road closures in play).

I will also say that the SF-LV trip is far and away our most discussed route on this forum, so you can learn a ton of information just by spending a little time looking around here.

Thanks for the replies so far lads

Ok so im arriving in san fran on the saturday 17th of April for 3 nights and then we"re hiring a car to travel to vegas on the tuesday the 20th april, we dont need to be in vegas till thursday night 22nd ,so our hotel in vegas is booked for the five nights so taking an overnight stay to the grand canyon is not possible during our time in vegas,i have 2 overnights to do before i get to vegas, what would your suggestions be for these 2 nights,i would really have liked to get to both death valley and the grand canyon but if this is not possible what would be our best alternatives

Well, it the GC is a must see for you, you could drive there directly from San Francisco. Its too far to do in one day, but you could drive as far as Kingman AZ in one day (or maybe Laughlin Nevada which has several casino hotels on the Colorado River). From there, you could make the drive to the Canyon and spend the next night there, and then return to Vegas.

Death Valley is only 2 hours from the strip, so that's quite easily done as a Daytrip from Vegas.

Or the other option would be to modify your hotel reservations so it better fits the trip you want to do, considering you're still a month away, that's usually not a problem. There are lots of other choices that you could fit into this trip, including the Coast highway, Yosemite, and Sequoia, to name a few places.
