Default WI to Houston with a stop in IA

I am helping a friend move to Houston in a little over a week. We are stopping in Des Moines to pick up one of her new roommates and are going to take our time getting down there so we don't beat the furniture. Are there any interesting places to stop along the way? We are open to different routes as well.

Default Three on the Way and an Alternative

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There are three 'high spots' that I'd recommend where you could spend several hours each if you have an interest in recent American history. The first would be in Independence, MO outside Kansas City - the home of Harry Truman which is quite different from the lifestyle enjoyed by today's Presidents. The second would be the Oklahoma City Memorial, very somber and moving. Finally, a stop at Dealy Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, the site of President Kennedy's assassination. Besides those major stops, there are smaller stops all along I-35, your major route down. If you want an alternative to the Interstates, consider US-71 south out of Kansas City to Shreveport and then US-59 to Dallas.
