coast trip San Fran to Los Angeles

We are wanting to drive the coast road from SanF to LA and then onto Las Vegas beg of July. Would love some imput and advice as the best places to stop and visit/stay over, attractions to not miss, also how long to take out to do the trip. What the traffic is like and how best to find our way round. Should we try to stay in LA or outside of? 2 adults and 3 teenagers so need to visiting places that are interesting.

There are many different types of attractions so what appeals to you, National parks, Theme parks,city's, Nature, all of them ? Lol !

How long have you got ? You could spend years exploring the Southwest and never get bored. As well as the coast in California you have Wine country, gold rush towns, National parks such as Yosemite and Sequoia, Death valley to name a few. Vegas has [along with D/V] Zion N.P on it's doorstep and for an overnight stop how about the Grand canyon.
