First Big Roadtrip! - SF to Seattle

Hi all,
I'm an east-coaster heading out west for a roadtrip in September. I've got about 6 days to drive from San Fran to Seattle. My plan is to stay mainly on 101, shooting off a couple times eastward. I would like to make it up to Portland/Columbia River area or Yakima by the 4th or 5th night, as I plan to do some white water rafting. Hoping for some suggestions on sights to see, places to stay, and activities to do along the way. Thanks!

thank you Mark for the welcome, and the links! would you say 5 to 7 hours driving each day is reasonable or a stretch? the way i've planned this trip out, i'm wanting to stop for the night in certain towns and this is what it's coming to for driving times...
