Need Advice for Phili to San Luis Obispo road trip

Hi all. I'm possibly planning a trip at the end of august from Philadelphia Pa, to San Luis Obispo Ca. I will be sharing the driving with my Dad so I figure we'll probably be able to drive at least 12 hours a day. I'm down to sleep in the car and try to go closer to 15 hours a day but my dad is probably about 50, (I'm 20) so I don't think he could handle that schedule for more than a day. Any advice or insight on how long this should take? Also the current route given by google maps takes me (roughly) from phili to St. Louis, then through Oklahoma, Texas blah blah pretty much a straight line to SLO, so any good stuff to see along the way? Also does anyone know how much it costs to ship stuff coast to coast? Because I'm not sure if I should just leave/sell my stuff (tv, speakers, kitchen stuff...) or just leave it and buy more when i get there.

p.s. Any advice about places to eat would be great too because I LOVE experiencing local food. I would to know what the "phili cheesesteak" of other places is :).

As with any RoadTrip, there are lots of decisions to be made, the most basic of which are: What's the purpose? and How long do I have? It sounds like your purpose is to move. The route GoogleŽ Maps is giving you is the most straightforward and would normally take about 5 days at a reasonable pace. Major sights along the way include the Arch in St, Louis, the Memorial in Oklahoma City, the Petrified Forest, and the Grand Canyon (with a short detour). Whether to ship, cart, or sell your stuff is entirely up to you and the value of your stuff (including any sentimental value). And as far as where to eat, I can't give you any better advice than I offered recently to another poster.

I just want to emphasize that multiple 10+ hour days on the road takes a toll on you whether you're 20 or 50. And, in fact, I'd put my money on the 50 year old because they are generally more experienced drivers and make better driving decisions overall. Not to say you're not a good driver, swimry, but nobody can maintain good, safe, driving after fatigue sets in. Even if you don't feel tired, you will get mesmerized after awhile by the car in front of you and will be doing more following the back bumper of the cars ahead than you will be doing paying attention to other things going on around you.

But if you do decide to do a speed run, read these tips to keep it as safe as possible. Even if you do the trip as quick as you can, please try to enjoy yourselves and play a bit along the way, too.
