See attachment. It's a screen capture from that page.
You might need to clear your cache. I think they made it official, updating the Yosemite page, on Thursday night or Friday morning.
It is interesting that the Yosemite and CalTrans dates are different. It looks like Yosemite has the actual date it closed, while the CalTrans date might be the date they decided that they wouldn't reopen it.
I saw the Nov 14th date on Thurs evening (California time zone) and the home page alert that Tioga Pass and Glacier Point roads were closed for season. on the YNP website. (The current conditions page had not yet been updated and still said closed but call to check at the time.)
I will go back and look at some of my photos. I believe CalTrans controls and maintains roads outside the park up to the boundary and Yosemite National Park controls roads inside the park. My recollection from driving up the east side from Lee Vining in Oct. is that there was at least one gate to close the road before reaching the park boundary.
The different jurisdictions ( state and federal) over the sections of the road explain why Cal Trans can "open Highway 120" in Spring which is up to the park boundary on the west and east sides. The section through Yosemite National Park often opens later because they plow from west and have to go through the Olmsted Point avalanche area. this "disconnect" unfortunately may make it harder for road trippers to get accurate information about the road.
There is a lower closure gate in Lee Vining Canyon and an upper closure gate right at the pass before the entrance kiosk. Caltrans has jurisdiction up to the kiosk. When they close the west side they close it at Crane Flat, which is well inside the park.
Thank you for providing the west side of Highway 120 information. Obviously I'm not familiar with that side/ route.
New study about global weather patterns and the impact they will have on our TPP
The Tioga Pass closed on November 14th. Mark Sedenquist came so close to nailing it with his prediction of November 15th at 8am, but it was not to be. However Mark does pick up the title of Dctpp (Darn close Tioga Pass Prognosticator) for the 2017 winter closure. (Perhaps I could see if management could send you an RTA cap for your effort ! ) ;-)
Next up will be the 2018 Spring opening contest.
Dave.
That's pretty darn funny! I get benefits every day from RTA.
And I have updated the particulars on the front page of this Winter Closing forum for your use next spring.
Mark
Congratulations mark. You were the closest and you made your prediction early prediction in an atypical weather year. Jessica
