Am planning on moving from the amazing Arizona heat to Northern California (monterey, santa cruz, palo alto area).

Will probably have friends attending with me and want to take a scenic route around the 4 day mark. Grand Canyon is already one stop....looking for other awesomeness along the way.

    Welcome to RTA!

Bring an umbrella -- my cousins live in the Bay area and have commented on how much rain they've gotten in the last few months!

First -- do you have MAPS? Real, PAPER maps, not the kind you see on a 5" or even a 15" screen. A road atlas, such as Rand McNally, will work, and so will free maps from AAA (if you're a member).

Off-hand, I can throw out a bunch of things that you could do on the way up. Grand Canyon is only one of them. Sequoia National Park is another one.

The reality is, though -- it's almost 1000 miles from Phoenix to Palo Alto, via Grand Canyon. You've got about a 4-5 hour drive from Phoenix up to the Canyon, then time to see it. From there, it's almost 800 miles to Palo Alto - a day and a half drive. So you're not going to have a whole lot of extra time.

    Default Scenic route.

From Grand canyon I would head towards Vegas, through Death valley and up US395 and then cross the Sierra Nevada on the Tioga Pass [CA120] through Yosemite NP and on to the coast. You won't have a lot pf spare time but the changing scenery throughout the drive is spectacular.
