10 days round trip from New Orleans in June

This is my 1st post so I hope you lovely people can help us out.
Doing a road trip now from New Orleans return after a house swap unfortunately fell through due to illness 8 weeks before we arrive in June.Done a bit of homework and as we are avid country and blues music fans would like to take in Nashville and Memphis for approx 5 nights total.Natchez & Vicksburg also get good reviews however unsure if it would be best to head east towards Alabama or West towards Texas.Very aware it will be quite hot.Plan to date is pick up car lunchtime on a Sunday and head towards Natchez / Vicksburg area 1st night.Then 2 nights in Memphis area before a further 3 nights in Nashville.This leaves 4 nights to get back to New Orleans.Any suggestions would be appreciated.If anything we are definitely scenery people and not so much into looking at too many historical sites.Smaller towns with the local feel are also preferred over bigger cities.We will be staying in very basic hotels as all we require is a bed and hopefully a refrigerator. Any suggestions on accommodation would be very much appreciated.Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

First thing I'd recommend is the Natchez Trace Parkway. Scenic, small towns along the way.

Vicksburg is very interesting, and the town is historic as well as beautiful. We spent 2 or 3 hours there when in fact, we could have spent an entire day poking around. If the history doesn't intrigue you (major Civil War battlefield), the architecture of the older homes may.

Of course, Elvis Presley's home is in Memphis.

Do you have maps or a decent road atlas? If not, if you order it now from RTA store, you should have it in a couple of weeks. You'll need one for decent planning -- it will show the parkway and other things that a small screen won't show you.

Even though your trip is in June, you would do well to follow the advice above. That road atlas has very good maps (I buy a new one each trip) Not only do the maps show you the many routes from which you could choose, it has all the little towns and the cities through which they run, as well as most (if not all) of the attractions along the way. You will find the atlas invaluable during the planning.

You will see all the scenic routes highlighted. If you like scenery, there is no shortage of that in the southern States. The other thing you might like to do if you are a member of RACQ, is take your membership with you. It will give you access to tourism information from the AAA anywhere in the country. They will also give you free maps, if you rather have maps than an atlas on the road. I normally travel with both and each night highlight in the atlas, all the roads on which I have travelled. Great to look back on later, or when sharing your trip with family and friends, to be able to see instantly exactly where you went.
