  1. Default Going to Las Vegas from Kansas on August 8th

Hi guys, I need some help. I will have holidays from August 8th until August 18th. My girlfriend has to come back to Kansas by 19th. I am planning to go Los Vegas by driving. I do not know what to do on they way to Las Vegas. Can I have any suggestion/plan? I prefer not to go the places which are dangerous. *It would be awesome if someone could list where should I go day to day and should I stay overnight or not?* Thanks!!

    Welcome to RTA!

Kansas is a big state, and you didn't say where you are starting from, so I picked Topeka (since it's the capital and on the eastern edge of the state). Topeka to Las Vegas is almost 1300 miles, so you MUST do at LEAST one overnight, preferably 2. Two days of 650 miles is over and above what commercial truckers are allowed to do, and very exhausting, so I would make two days of 500 miles and one day of 300 miles, arriving on the third day of driving. \

I'm not sure what you mean about places that are dangerous. If you drive safely, keep aware of your surroundings, and use the same strategies that you do at home to stay safe, you should be find. If something doesn't look or feel right, it probably isn't, so you will find yourself leaving those areas, which are usually in a bad area of a city.

How long do you plan to stay in Las Vegas? You will need 6 days of the 10 for driving, so it doesn't leave you much time to stop anywhere along the way if you are going to be in Las Vegas for 4 days.

One idea would be to take one route to get to Las Vegas and another one to return.

But to give you more information, we'd really need to know where you are starting/ending in Kansas, and how much time you plan to be IN Las Vegas, plus a little bit about your interests.

    Thanks for replying me.

I am living in Lawrence. The main objective for my trip will be "travel to places as many as possible." The purpose that I want to go to Las Vegas is look around. I am not going to gamble over there. I prefer to see beautiful views and go to some theme parks. I can stay in Las Vegas for a night or two nights. If there are many interesting activities to do I could stay for more. If not, I prefer to go other places. I prefer not to arrive Las Vegas on weekend because the hotels are too expensive. Do you have any ideas? Is the road safe to drive from Kansas to Las Vegas in August?

All highways are safe to travel although the risks are obvious as they would be at home, accidents happen ! It would be hard to find "dangerous places" so don't go looking for them ! Just use your common sense as you would at home, if some place/area doesn't feel right it probably isn't so move on. Lots to see out west, Grand canyon, Monument valley, Lake Powell and much more, best to get the maps out and see what appeals.

I am not good with maps. I only use GPS while I am driving and stick with it.

You need to develop your map skills. A GPS can get you in trouble if you blindly follow it. You should use maps to plan a trip, stop by Walmart or a truck stop and pick up a Rand McNally Road Atlas. This will give you the overall big picture.

I will get the map asap. What I found from the map in Roadtrip America are:

    Denver:
    Hammond's candies factory
    Royal Gorge

    Colorado:
    Zion national park
    Glenwood hot springs
Powerhorn ski resort (I don't think this is available for August)
    Bin 707
    Fruita biking trails
    Hold n the rocks
    Lake Powell

    Las Vegas
Eiffel tower at Paris Las Vegas

Do you have any suggestions? What to add on or take out? I have no ideas.

I would definitely hone your map skills. Get someone to teach you. It will help you, as Royal Gorge is west of Colorado Springs which is south of Denver. Zion National Park is in southern Utah, not in Colorado. Glenwood Hot Springs is west of Denver right on I-70. Powderhorn will be green in August, so you're correct there. Lake Powell is in southern Utah and northern Arizona, not in Colorado.

In Las Vegas - Eiffel Tower, the fountains at Bellagio, the volcano eruption at The Mirage, are among some of the things to see. About 50 miles from Las Vegas is Valley of Fire State Park Closer is Red Rocks Conservation Area.
