Houston to Chicago (12 days)

Hello guys,

A friend and I are planning a 12 days road trip from Houston to Chicago in the middle of September and this is what we've got so far:


From Houston drive to New Orleans. From NO go to Natchez and take the Trace Parkway all the way to Nashville (possibly at some point turning to go and see Memphis)...
After Nashville we don't really have any idea of what to do until we get to Chicago... and we'd probably have about 6 days left...
Is there anything worth checking out? We don't mind driving a lot. Only thing i found was Mammoth Cave in Kentucky
I heard very different things about St Louis and Indianapolis... some people say they are great and some other told me not to bother with them.... I was also thinking to drive all the way to Minneapolis and Milwaukee but not sure if it is doable.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

It may pay you to have another look at your maps. I have not found any part of the US, where there is nothing.

Check out the various features on this site, and all the detail on your maps.... not gps, google or any other computer mapping program, but good quality maps. Maps like those produced by AAA and in the Rand McNally.road atlas.

As you check your maps, and all the little - and not so little places along the way, check their tourism websites.

Also, I read a recent post on here which highlighted the many resources to find attractions along the way. The Map Wizard, Attractions along the interstates and 26 things to see in each State.

I'm sure that all these resources will lead you to others I have not even mentioned.
