San Francisco to New York City

I have 22 days to drive from San Francisco to Newark Liberty Airport in February. Route 66 would be ok or I could go across the north through Omaha; but the two cities I really want to see are New Orleans and Chicago and I'd like to spend 2 or 3 days in both of these cities. Is this feasible or a ridiculous expectation? I am comfortable driving 7-8 hours a day, then one day sightseeing or even 2x 6-7 hour days before a day off. I am after a broad experience of USA, not necessarily a gallery of greatest sights: Is this achievable or should I stick to the most direct routes?

A coast to coast trip can be driven in six days, so with 22 days, you have ample time to do the trip of your dreams. Study a good paper map of the US and note all the places/things along the way. Pick out those which are of greatest interest to you, and there will be members here to help you with an efficient route to make it work.

If you are a member of the NRMA, be sure to take your membership with you. It will give you access to free maps and tourism information from the AAA. You could pick up detailed State maps of each State you plan to traverse, as well as major urban centres, while in SF.
