The Google I-90 output sends you through Chicago and across the toll roads. That's why my suggestion to take I-29 from I-90 down to I-70 adds 100 miles. You will avoid traffic, significant tolls, and possible lake effect snow.

Is I-74 at Davenport down to I-70 ok too? It kind of angles down to I-70 and cuts the corner compared to I-29.

I sure agree with trying to skirt Chicago for many reasons!

Yes. In fact, that's better and I don't know why I didn't suggest that. Take I-90 to Sioux Falls, I-29 to north of Omaha, I-680 to I-80 to Davenport, then I-74 to Indy to pick up I-70.

This might be a little late but I wrote 3 trip reports about driving from northern Colorado to Seattle in late December. 1 report for the I-80 route and 2 reports for the I-90 route.
Weather can be challenging. I've been commuting 100 miles/day for the last 11 years in Colo so I'm pretty comfortable (and perhaps overconfident) with the conditions I find.
