Denver to Des Moines in April... Kansas vs. Nebraska

My 10 year old travel buddy (daughter) and I are making a cross country trip in April from San Diego to Chicago in April. I have been learning a great deal from this forum, so first of all... MANY THANKS! I'm sure I'll be posting for info on Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, etc very soon but right now my decision tree brain can only handle looking one section I'm debating about...

I'm looking at the section between Denver and Des Moines (then next stop Iowa City), so I could use some advice on which route to take (Nebraska or Kansas). We are very flexible and would love to know what attractions might be had on these routes.

I-76 to I-80 Nebraska

I-70 to I-35 Kansas


Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Andrea, welcome to the RTA forums !

You can scroll down this page where you will find 'Similar threads' and repeat as many times as you need to as you open new pages. You can also use the search function and once you have decided which route holds the most appeal to you I'm sure you will get some help in 'fine tuning' that section if needed.

I can't offer suggestions to the east of Denver, but I look forward to your next round of questions to the west and will be keeping an eye on this thread.

Just remember, both routes are taking you through the "bread basket" of America. It is definitely farm country. This means that you will see lots of farmland-and for some this can be boring.

I suggest that you go north to Cheyenne, Wyoming and take the Lincoln Highway acorss Nebraska. If you follow the old road (lots of dirt road but they can be bypassed) you will see many unusual sites, particulary bridges. Another very interesting things is the railroad switching yard in North Platte, Nebraska.

The Journey is as important as the destination.

Be sure to check at each National Park and Monument (and some state parks as well) you come to, be sure to ask about the Junior Ranger Program. It's a great way to get the most out of her visits (including free badges!)
