37,500 mile road trip

Hi Mark -

All the stats (highs-lows; best-worst; etc.) for our trip are still up on our original travel website -- it is still fun for us to look back on all the fun we had during that year.

Our average for motels was $79.50 including tax and including at least a dozen nights over $100 (New York City, Washington, DC, Sanibel, FL, etc.)

Our most expensive night was for The Greenbrier Inn in White Sulphur Springs, W VA -- a place I had long dreamed of staying and it was truly a magical experience and worth every dollar of the $500 tab -- including meals and the spa -- yes, that was one night! You only go around once -- and we figured we may never get back there.

Our high gas was $2.35 a gallon near Death Valley, CA and our lowest was $1.22 in Georgia -- our average was $1.56.

Gas was our 5th largest expenditure and 5% of our overall budget. I recently recalculated it at $2.35 a gallon -- it would still have been our 5th largest expenditure and 8% of the total cost. PLEASE EVERYBODY, DON'T LET THE COST OF GAS KEEP YOU FROM DOING A LONG TRIP OF A LIFETIME - there are so many other factors to consider.
