Although our family traveled and we had quite a bit of confidence in our sons, we asked them to call nightly so that we wouldn't worry on their first road trip (which was a rapid trip across the country to college). This took some discussion prior to their first trip and now 10 years later they still call! I think an end-of-day call, however short, is a reasonable request to help you. Our sons had cellphones but not internet access. So we made an offer that they could call us around 3 - 4 pm and give us their potential destinations, then we would go online to check on motels and talk to them about options before making reservation (online rates tended to be cheaper). They appreciated the help and saving money. We've been pleasantly surprised over the years at how many times a day they have called us and enjoy sharing their enthusiasm plus pride in their accomplishments.
PS I'm another adult who calls my husband at home at the end of every driving day.
