San Fran to Vegas - with a party twist?

Hi All.

Thanks for contributing to this site, I've found some really useful information so far.

In early Feb, 5 of us will be picking up an RV in SF and road tripping it to Las Vegas in time for the USA rugby sevens. Not only is this a trip of a lifetime, it also serves as part stag/batchelor trip, two birthdays, and a chance to blow off a little steam away from the daily grind.

So, we may have slightly different expectations than most that post on here for advice.

We are certainly very keen on seeing the sights that this route provides. But the information I'm hoping to gather from you is where are the best places along route to stop for the night for great nightlife. The big cities, SF, LA, SD, LV, we've been to before so know what to expect - but what about the smaller cities and towns en route?

My mind immediately jumps to college towns, which might have what we're after.

We have 9 nights between SF and LV. Where shall we stop off?

Any info greatly appreciated.

Besides the big cities and college towns, places you ought to be considering include Monterey/Carmel, Lompoc (outside Vandenberg Air Force Base), Solvang, and Palm Springs. That should be plenty, after all you only have 9 nights.
