Central Nebraska to either San Francisco or Tampa

My wife and I are looking at taking a roadtrip this coming Fall. We'll probably have anywhere from 10-12 days to do this. We live smack dab in the middle of Nebraska and are considering driving to either San Francisco or Tampa and back. To anyone who's taken either of these trips (or something similar) do you have advice for things to do and see along the way to either?

Yes, we've got a ton of ideas for just about everywhere, but the choice of where to go is entirely up to you. Even then, before we can start offering specific sights to see, you'll have to help us out by telling us what sort(s) of thing(s) appeal to you. I can tell you that from Kearney, it's just about equidistant to either San Francisco or Tampa, both are about a three day drive, and so you'll have to spend at least half of the time you have available for your trip behind the wheel, and only about half actually doing and seeing stuff. So choose wisely.
