Default Rent or buy used car?

    Hi there,

This spring or fall I am planning to go with my two grown-up kids on a four to six week roadtrip from Chicago to New Orleans and then east to Florida or New York. I would be very happy for advice on wether it is best to rent a car or buy a used one at the start of the trip and sell it at the end. We live in Sweden and will be flying to and from the US.

    Many thanks
    Bjarne

    Welcome to the forum!

This issue has been discussed a lot here. You might do a search to find previous threads. I think the consensus has been that it's better to rent. First, you won't have to worry about breakdowns as the rental agency will deal with any malfunctions and will replace the vehicle for you if need be. Second, you won't have to deal with trying to obtain vehicle insurance when you're not a US resident. I know there are other reasons but these are the two that stick out in my mind.
