Is Hertz the best to rent from?

I want to plan a trip from NYC to Los Angeles and I would like to keep the same car for the whole trip. Is Hertz the best to rent a car from? What other reputable companies are there? How much would it cost to keep a car for a whole month?

Hertz is great, but usually a bit more expensive than some others. I rented from them for years as my first choice as I had a corporate discount through them. But, I've had satisfactory experience with many companies -- National, Alamo, Budget, Avis, Enterprise, etc. The only one of the majors I've had a negative experience with was Thrifty, and I therefore avoid that company.

Costs will vary widely depending on your times and the company. Rates vary with supply and demand, by company, and the best (cheapest) company today may be tomorrow's worst deal. When it is time for you to make a reservation, shop around or use Expedia or Travelocity or another such comparative search engine to find the best deal.
