Brit tourists planning trip from New Orleans to Charlotte, NC

Hello everyone. We are visiting New Orleans in early December, from England. We plan to do the tourist thing for a few days, and then travel from New Orleans up to Charlotte in North Carolina for a relative's wedding. We are trying to decide whether to fly up there from New Orleans, or rent a car and take a leisurely drive up there (we have about 3 days at our disposal to get there). Ideally we would love to do some sightseeing on the journey and think it would be great driving through the southern states, but the question is... is it worth it? Are there many interesting things to see and do on the route up there to make the drive worth it?, or would it be a case of spending most of the 3 days in the car, seeing nothing but the freeway? In which case we may as well fly and have more time in Charlotte

We would really appreciate any suggestions as to a possible driving route, and things to do/see on the way!

Although I don't know many places in that part of the country off hand (seeing as how my road atlas walked away on me), I would certainly reccomend driving anywhere rather than flying if you can. Let's face it, you are visiting a very historical part of the United States, and as such you really can't enjoy it by airplane, only by ground. Take in some Historic Battlefields from the Civil War (I know there must be at least a dozen between Nawlins (New Orleans) and Charlotte.

I personally say get a few regional or state maps, pinpoint some "Points of Interests" along your proposed route, toss in some government lands (National Parks, National Forests, National Historic Parks, National Battlefields, State Parks and Forests, etc), and you'll have alot to see. Perhaps someone more familiar with that region can reccomend some sights.

In the mean time... I am going to hunt down that atlas... this is only a 500 Sq ft apartment, so it couldn't have gotten far. It must be Gnomes or somethin.
