Both Mapquest and Google Maps agree: By I-15 and I-84, SLC to Seattle is 840 miles. No way that can be done in 12 hrs 10 minutes like they each say. That's at least a day and a half in real time.

Thanks for the correction, guys! I would have merrily tromped along thinking all the time that I'd be almost there... until Waze recalculated. Should have just bought an atlas!
It's not too late to buy an atlas. Stop at any truck stop or Wal-Mart and get one. Well worth the money ($7 or 8 at Wal-Mart). We keep ours until they fall apart.

If you don't have an atlas, you should still by one ASAP! You can get one for under 10 bucks at Walmart.
A GPS is a great tool, but it should never be your only or even primary way for finding your route.
Walmart now has the "Large Scale" atlas which is spiral-bound. Much nicer than the standard atlas and costs very little more. It's about half the price of the same thing at a truck stop, but that's because the Walmart version is custom-printed with a list of all Walmarts in the country and Walmart-specific ads.
It became obvious long before you posted the above comment that you did not have paper maps / atlas. As the others said, not too late... and essential. The answer to many of the questions you ask are on paper maps.
I have seen the 2013 Rand McNally for $2.99 at some truckstops... now that the 2014 version is out.

Lifey: I just took your tip about talking to the clerk at the truck stop before stopping there for the night. Definitely made me feel a lot more secure. Possibly the best night's sleep I've had since I set out!
Going to go inside and get myself a paper map and then finish the way to Seattle! Thanks again, everybody! Looking forward to posting the trip report I'm compiling!
