  1. Default Quick question about distance to travel in one day

We are planning a trip this summer from Georgia to Arizona. There will be four people (2 adults, 2 children) and one dog. We are towing a 30 foot trailer with a 250 diesel. I was wondering how far we can realistically expect to go in one day. We don't want to kill ourselves and try to drive too far, but we also don't want to end up taking the entire vacation time trying to get there and get home with little time in between to enjoy the sights.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a reaonable distance for our daily drives?

    Thanks,
    palla

600 miles. That will be about 12 hours of steady driving with minimal stops. For example, Atlanta to Phoenix is 1900 miles and would be a LONG 3 days, an easy 4 days.

    Default Getting the balance right.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

I think you need to consider what your "comfort zone" is regarding travel and how long you have in total for the vacation and make it work for you. You could also look as the journey as part of the adventure rather than just "trying to get there".

With a 30ft trailer, 2 kids and a dog who will all want to let of steam I would recommend at the very least 4 days and even then I expect the kids will find it a little too much. Here is a list of places to get of the road and have a little R&R on route.

I appreciate the responses. I will be honest, there is no way we would be able to do 600 miles several days in a row. I don't know if the adults or kids would complain first, but I know we wouldn't enjoy the trip if we were trying to get that many miles covered in one day.

We are planning to sit back and enjoy the trip. Because of our current work situations, we are able to take several weeks off without worry. We have stops planned along the way and right now are looking at 21 days total, but it is probable that the trip will be longer than that. We are definately taking Southwest Dave's approach and including things each person is interested in. We were thinking about 400 miles per day. I guess from what I can tell, 400 miles is pretty reasonable.

    Thanks again!

    Default Time to enjoy !

You will find lots of info throughout the RTA site to help with your planning but if you have any other specific questions just ask !

With 21 days [plus] you can take a relaxed approach to the trip and 3 to 400 miles a day to get across country would be a good approach to the trip. Depending on how you are spending your time it would be worth considering going up through Utah and Colorado on the way back home and take your time exploring some of there natural wonders.
