    Default General Forum

I run several forum sites and a general forum can be a big help. I wanted to post a forum about about a road trip book or some trip sofware and there really aren't places for it.

Not to mention just a place for members to talk in general and build a stronger community...

Default There's a place for you here

Try the GEAR-UP Section for books and software reviews/inquiries. The thing with this forum is if you don't find a place with an exact match to what you want to post, find the closest fit. If it doesn't work, a moderator will do the ol postal-shuffle and find it a good home.

    Hope you enjoy the forum,
    Brad

Default my opinion---- i agree with Max

I think Maxxedman has a good idea, a general or an announcement thread .something we could use for general stuff like announcing a roadtrip or wishing a happy birthday to another member. It could also be a place just for new people to say hello. Here is an example of what I mean.

My wife and I will be leaving for a 3 week vacation late Friday (September 1) or very early Saturday. This will be our 3rd time driving across country. (Something I recommend to everyone to try at least once) Anyway we plan to take Rt70 out west to Salt Lake city go west across the great salt flats and desert to the Calf coast ( perhaps drive across the Golden gate bridge and visit the wine country) then head up north to Washington state and head back east taking Rt 90 to Rt 25 to Rt 80 back . That’s the general plan although it could change as we go.
If there are any members who live anywhere close by to the route we are driving and want to hook up for a short meeting. You know coffee, lunch, dinner or just to chit chat just send me a PM. We plan to spend most of our time between the giant redwoods and along the Oregon coast but do want to stop for a ball game somewhere along the way ( STL , KC, Denver , SF or Seattle it don’t matter where ) It would be nice to stop and say hello to another member along the way. That is if time permits.

    Default Great idea, Euclid

Watch for a PM from me. Coffee in Washington, the home of Starbucks, sounds like fun.

Thanks for the suggestions, there is a history of Member activity on the Great American RoadTrip Forum that would suggest that such a general topic would not be utilized very much. In fact, there are twelve Forum topics that were started over the years in response to similar requests from members and lack of activity beyond a week or two has led to their pruning and removal. As Arizona Brad has suggested -- comments and queries about anything related to road trip gear, (software, books, tools, etc.) can be found in the Gear Up Forum.

We prefer that such in-progress field reports be posted in the RoadTrip Field Reports Topic. It has worked the best for several years and while we certainly will consider adding new topics (see the memo above) it has been our experience that new topics (like a General Forum Topic) are rarely used by anyone for more than a week or two.

If you look at the RoadTrip Field Reports -- you will see a number of trips where various RoadTrippers have received ideas, suggestions and local intel while they were on the road. In addition, we have looked at establishing a RoadTrip Ambassador program where local RTA members form an informal REACT-like group willing to provide roadtrip assistance and ideas to others on the road. Such a program has been going on informally for over ten years and all of the current and past Moderators have participated. That being said, we might still create a general roadtrip discussion topic forum -- but the more likely scenario is that Moderators will simply move any such posts into those forum topics that have worked so well in the past.
