    Default Hawaii?

    Hi,
We are on the planning stages for a trip to Hawaii...
Fly from Bay area to Maui(which airport)?
    Rent a car.
Plans to visit Haleakala NP(anything else)??
    Drop car back.
Then we plan to take a ferry(any options) to Big Island to visit the Volcanoes.
Drop the car back and fly back to bay area.

And yes, our target would be sometime in the 1st fortnight of April 2006.

    My questions??
Is this feasible in 8 days?
    Will I miss out anything?
Which part of Big island do we have to get off in a ferry? Any chances to rent a car nearby?

Absolutely any information will be helpful.

    thanks,
    Cool.

There is a book that I have been meaning to review, but I can't seem to find the time. But I think, knowing your interests in hiking and exploring, that you would find it helpful. It is written by Brad Olsen and is part of his extreme adventures series. Check it out and see if you find it helpful (and if you actually use it, please let me know so I can include your comments in the article!)

Sorry, I haven't ever had time to spend time in Hawaii..

    Default Hawaiian Ferries?

I'm not sure there are ferries that routinely operate between the larger Hawaiian islands. There are plans for large ferries capable of both car and passenger transportation from Honolulu to most of the other major islands, but those plans have been pushed back and service is not due to start until 2007. Currently, I believe there is only limited passenger service between a couple of the smaller islands which are close to each other, including Maui to Moloka'i or Lana'i, but not Maui to Hawai'i.

    Default Finalised

I seemed to have finally worked on the trip.

    May 6-10 Big Island, HI.
Got a good deal on inter island flights :-)
    So, flying to Maui.

    May 11-13 Hana, Haleakala NP.

    May 14 back home.

If anyone is trying for HI, look for deals on ATA airlines. I could find it the cheapest. Or if there is anything else, feel free to share.

There are inter island ferried between all other islands except Big Island.

If I had known a lil earlier, would have included a 1 day ferry ride to Lanai from Maui. But, I am happy.

Really looking forward to the trip.

    So many hopes:
Hope the weather is okay. Hope there is an eruption at the Volcanoes NP, hope it is not too hot, hope I do not get tired after a long day.....

    Hope and hope and hope.

    :-)

Default Jealousy rears it's ugly head here...

I haven't been to Hawaii in years. Great place!!

Rent a bike to ride down from Haleakala Crater and go there for sunrise. Very cool trip!

    No Oahu?

I don't have any advise except to say: take sunscreen, play to the point of exhaustion and fully enjoy each day because you can sleep on the plane on the way home, and tell us all about it when you get back!

    Default :-)

    Thanks, Judy.

I am somehow planning to do just that.... :)

If it was the 1st option, our interests would be to go to "less commercial" places. So easy option out was Big island and Maui. Volcanoes were too tempting(crossing fingers to see some glow). If a 2nd oppurtunity strikes(after being to a whole lots of other places), then may be Oahu.
