The Fremont people, so named because the first archaeological sites were discovered in the Fremont River Valley, lived in in this region from between around 600 to 1300 AD. They are known today for their extensive rock art, of which this is one of the most impressive examples. As well as depicting the animals they hunted, the petroglyphs also show human-like figures with large, often elaborate headdresses.
