• Munster to La Porte, Indiana

      Northwest Indiana offers numerous road trip adventures for people in or near the Chicagoland area. The route has history, wetlands, sand dunes, and some of the best views of Lake Michigan.




      Munster, Indiana (starting point)
      Visit the 'Workers Sculpture' depicting the history of Munster located in the Yesterday & Today for Tomorrow Rotary Park. Continue east on Ridge Road and wander the shady and quiet grounds of the Carmelite Shrines.

      Highland, (mile 3)
      The Highway of Flags Veterans Memorial is located in Highland along US Highway 41. The memorial has a state flag for every state US Highway 41 passes through. US Highway 41 connects the upper peninsula of Michigan to Miami, Florida, via Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. And for you rockers... In the song 'Ramblin' Man' the Allman Brothers sing, I was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus, goin' down Highway 41.

      Schereville (mile 9)
      US Highway 41 and US Highway 30 intersect in Schereville. Note: There is a White Castle restaurant on the northwest corner of the National Crossroads.

      Crown Point, (mile 19)
      The old Lake County Courthouse sits in Crown Point's town square. The light poles in Crown Point say "Come. Sit. Stay." Crown Point's high school call themselves the Bulldogs and in 2005 the sidewalks of Crown Point had a bunch of fun bulldog sculptures.

      La Porte, (mile 67)
      The Door Prairie Auto Museum is located along US Highway 35 on the southeast edge of La Porte. Keep an eye out for the nine-sided old Door Prairie Barn when driving to the museum. Northwest Indiana has a bunch of bogs and wetlands with fascinating ecosystems and geology. If you want to check one out, Billy's Bog is located just outside of La Porte.

      lndiana National Lakeshore, (mile 93)
      The best views of Lake Michigan are from atop Mount Baldy (a 126-foot sand dune). Mount Baldy is located on the eastern end of the national lakeshore on U.S. Highway 12 (just west of Michigan City).

      Gary, (mile 112)
      US Highway 12 is a scenic drive through the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore back to the town center at Gary, Indiana
