In observance of the 1976 Bicentennial,
the Munster Rotary Club commissioned the sculpture
of three figures (scroll down for individual
photos) representing the history of Munster,
Indiana. Fred Holly, a local sculptor, created
steel images depicting a native American, a
farmer, and a steelworker. Holly used "weathering
steel" for the works, a blend of steel
alloys. When exposed to weather, it gradually
acquires a relatively stable, rust-like patina,
eliminating the need for painting and further
maintenance.
