The town of Tehachapi, and the original railroad depot, were founded by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1870s. Faithfully reconstructed after being ravaged by fire in 1904, the depot now serves as a museum commemorating the rich railroad history of this community. In addition to a collection of vintage railroad signals, there are such implements on display as signs, lanterns, tools, photos and models. Docents are on hand to answer your questions.

Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Outside Tehachapi is the world famous Tehachapi Loop, engineered by Southern Pacific to enable trains to get through some mountainous terrain. You can still go there to watch trains loop around upon themselves. Much of the collection was donated by RTA friend Bill Stokoe. Photos of the original collection can be seen in the RTA link below.
