Hello and welcome to RTA.
You really can't do this drive safely in one day, never mind sight seeing.
Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
Seriously, and I will not be the only one to tell you this, you can not get from Massachusetts to South Carolina in a day. That's 900 miles, half again as much as professional long-haul drivers are permitted by law to drive in a day. Why? Because after about 550-600 miles every and any driver becomes so fatigued that they become a hazard to themselves, their passengers, and everyone else on the road, a level of impairment equivalent to driving drunk. Making it even worse in your case is the fact that the first 500+ miles will be down the so-called Ho Chi Minh Trail, I-95 through some of the worst traffic and congestion in the US. That stretch will require your constant, undivided attention and will sap your energy. You will be in no shape whatsoever to then attempt another 400 miles on top of it.
This is a two day drive, minimum, if you care about your children. You need to get a full night's sleep midway on this trip which would be roughly between Washington and Richmond
