The Road to Vegas: A RoadTripper's Guide to Interstate 15 between
Los Angeles and Las Vegas is the first in RTA's new RoadTrip
series. One of the most heavily traveled and underappreciated highways
in America, I-15 between the eastern edge of Los Angeles and the
southern end of the Las Vegas Strip is often dismissed as "long,
flat, and boring."
We beg to differ! This is a road with a ghost
town, an archaeological dig, the "world's tallest thermometer,"
and a place called Zzyzx. It rises and falls thousands of feet
over three mountain passes and skirts a tank base and a national
preserve. It follows part of old Route 66, and it's a gateway
to two national parks. Boring and flat? Sorry, but you'll have
to take those adjectives somewhere else.
The Road to Vegas is scheduled
for publication in fall 2007. Right now, we're gathering
the facts, photos, and stories that will let other
people in on the secret that I-15 between LA and the
Vegas Strip has lots to offer roadtrippers of all
ages and tastes. If you're already an expert on this
remarkably fascinating stretch of pavement (and any
destinations not too far from its exit ramps), we'd
love to hear about your favorite discoveries. You
can send
them to the editor, or you can share them with
the RTA community on the Great
American RoadTrip Forum. Either way, welcome to
the drive!
