The Clougherty Meat Packing Plant created the Farmer
John brand in 1953 and hired the Australian-born artist
Leslie Grimes to paint farm scenes on the sides of
their buildings in Los Angeles, Fresno, Phoenix
and Tucson in the 1960's. Gerald Thurman traveled
to Tucson earlier this month to document these murals,
which include some remarkable images of cowboys getting
"the raw end of the stick" from the animals
in their charge.
