Best places to see from LA to San Jose?

Driving from LA to San Jose and want to know the best place to stop along the way. Will arrive LA August 8 and need to be in Monterey Aug 13 -16. Then will fly home from SAn Jose on August 16th. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Want to do the coast and stop at Hearst Castle and Pebble Beach for last nights. Thank you!

It's not clear from your post how many days you're going to take for the drive north from L.A. to San Jose. You ask for the 'best place' (singular) to stop along the way indicating that you plan to take two days, but then say you plan to "stop at Hearst Castle and Pebble Beach for last nights' indicating that you plan to spend at least a few days on the journey. Finally, you give dates (Aug. 8 to 16 for the whole trip, and Aug. 13 to 16 for just the Monterey to San Jose portion. In any event, you can stay in the San Luis Obispo/Cambria area and easily see everything on the southern portion of the coast including Hearst Castle, and stay in the Carmel/Monterey/Pacific Grove area and see everything on the northern portion. There are far more things to see and do in the Monterey area than the more natural San Simeon/Cambria area, so you should adjust your relative time accordingly.
